The Epic of Gilgamesh, written in Mesopotamia in around 2100 BCE, is considered by many scholars to be the world's oldest surviving work of literature. The story follows the titular character, the ancient king of Uruk, and his journey to find immortality after the death of his best friend, Enkidu. Along the way, Gilgamesh encounters a number of mythical creatures, including a giant scorpion man and the wise goddess Siduri.
