There are several main branches of ecology, including population ecology, ecosystem ecology, and community ecology. Population ecology focuses on the dynamics of populations, such as birth, death, and migration. Ecosystem ecology focuses on the interactions between living and non-living elements of an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, and the physical environment. Community ecology focuses on the interactions between populations and communities of different species. In addition to these main branches, there are also sub-branches of ecology, such as behavioral ecology, evolutionary ecology, and conservation ecology.

Ecology is too broad a science that subdividing it into various branches and/or sub-disciplines depends upon the criterion (ia) set/chosen. Depending on where you look, it will vary from the two main sub-disciplines i.e. plant ecology and animal ecology, to over twenty including human ecology, population ecology, insect ecology, soil ecology, space ecology, etc

Ecology is the study of the interaction of living organisms with their physical environment. It is a large discipline that covers all organisms on Earth. Ecology is divided into two major subdivisions: autoecology and synecology. Autoecology deals with the study of ecology and ecosystems in single species up to the population level, while synecology focuses on a larger level as it examines ecology at communities on spatial and temporal levels. Because of the still broad categories, ecology is further divided into several specialized branches that focus on a wide variety of topics. Listed below are some of the major branches of ecology:
Terrestrial Ecology: This branch of ecology deals with the study of land organisms and how they interact with each other and adapt to their environment. It also focuses on the diversity and distribution of different organisms in various terrestrial habitats.
Aquatic Ecology: This branch of ecology deals with the study of the ecosystems found in bodies of water, be it marine, freshwater, or estuarine. Aquatic ecology focuses on the interactions among living organisms in a particular aquatic habitat which can directly affect various factors in the ecosystem.
