Microbes play a critical role in the carbon cycle, as they are responsible for the decomposition of organic matter and the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Bacteria and fungi break down dead plants and animals, converting them into nutrients that can be used by other organisms. In the process, carbon dioxide is released as a byproduct. In addition, microbes are also responsible for the fixation of carbon through photosynthesis. This process occurs when algae and other single-celled organisms absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into organic compounds. These compounds can then be consumed by other organisms, or stored in sediments or fossil fuels.
